Readers’ Corner: Trying to Lie

The other day, I went to see a famous Japanese Garden in Tokyo and met two elderly women. We sat on a bench, and I was very pleased with the beauty of the pond and the different kinds of trees around it. Then the women began asking questions. They asked my age, and then they asked about my wife and my work history. I remembered my comfortable life in America. No one even asked my age. The women’s questions made me feel uncomfortable, and I tried to answer them humorously, “My age? Guess how old I am. I had two wives, but they both left because I didn’t work much. I had many jobs, but I can’t remember all of them.” Then I walked away saying, “Have a nice day.”     (130 words)
