As a middle school English teacher, I think that assigning writing homework with no connection to classroom instruction is increasingly meaningless. Today, using AI applications, students can generate almost any type of writing as easily as heating frozen food in a microwave. It is nearly impossible to evaluate students’ writing. This is not only a problem in education; across society, many practices are out-of-date and are being replaced by new technologies. AI is powerful, but the current situation reminds me of a well-known quote about Charles Darwin’s ideas: “It is not the strongest of the species nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.” (AI was used only for editing.) (121 words)
