University 1st Place Essay: What Surprised Me in American University Classes

I have been in the U.S. as an exchange student since last August, and I have finished one semester. During this time, I noticed some interesting differences between American and Japanese universities. First, the clothing surprised me. Some students wear unique or revealing clothes, even in winter. At first, I felt confused because I was not used to seeing them. One day, a male professor wore a cute T-shirt with a Thomas character on it, and it made me smile during his lecture! Another big difference is class participation. In the U.S., students raise their hands whenever they have something to say and patiently wait until the professor calls on them. In Japan, students usually stay quiet unless they are asked a question. I like the American class style because I feel motivated not only by the professors, but also by the other students!   (144 words)  By Makorin
